Prof. P. L. Ballaney

Prof. P. L. Ballaney was born on Dec. 1, 1927. He graduated in Mechanical as well as Electrical Engineering in 1952 from Poona University. He completed his Master’s degree M.S. (Mechanical Engineering) from Michigan State University, East Lansing, U.S.A in year 1960.

Prof. Ballaney joined Delhi College of Engineering (then Delhi Polytechnic) in the year 1959 as Sr Lecturer, and became Asstt. Prof. in 1963. He was made Professor in 1965, which he continued till 1985 when he superannuated. He was Head of Mech. Engg. Deptt. and was Dean Faculty of Technology University of Delhi.

Prof. Ballaney contributed immensely to the learning of Mechanical Engineering subjects through his books which are particularly suited for Indian environment. He authored books on ‘Thermal Engineering’, ‘Theory of Machines’, ‘IC. Engines’, ‘Applied Thermodynamics’, and ‘Refrigeration and Air-conditioning’. All the books were approved by National Book Trust of India and were recommended text books in engineering colleges throughout India. The books are popular even now and have seen many editions and scores of reprints. Prof. Ballaney is one of the Founder Members of ISHRAE (Indian Society of Heating, refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers) and had been its President also. He is Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India). Prof. Ballaney was also honoured with “The Best Citizen of India Award” by International Publishing House.

Prof. P. Kundu

Born in Kolkata in 1932, he graduated in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University in 1953. Prof. Kundu also completed his M.Sc. in Physics, 1952-54 from Calcutta University. He obtained Ph.D. Degree in Elect. Engineering from Banaras Hindu University in 1966 for which he went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wise., USAl964to 1966 under the USAID Scheme.

He worked as Lecturer and later as Reader in Electrical Engineering in Banaras Hindu University from 1955 to 1968. Then he worked as Professor and Head of Electrical Engineering Department at G.B. Pant University, Pantnagar, Nainital, from 1968 to 1974 and then shifted to DCE in 1974. Prof. Kundu went to England 1956 to 1958 for Post-graduate Practical Training with MIs Crompton Parkinson Ltd. under the Commonwealth Bursary Scheme. Prof Kundu joined as Professor of Electrical Engineering, Delhi College of Engineering in 1974. He was also working as Head of the Department from 1980 till his retirement in 1992.

He made valuable contributions in the development of the Department in DCE and also teaching. He started professional societies for the benefit of students and practicing engineers at DCE and Delhi. He was the Founder Secretary of IEEE Delhi Section in 1978 and Founder Chairman of IEEE Power Society in 1981. Prof Kundu was the founder of the IEEE Students’ Branch No.9190 at DCE in 1983. He was instrumental in organizing National and International, IEEE, lEE, IE Seminars and Conferences. The IEEE, All India Students Seminar was started by Professor Kundu in 1987. This students’ seminar was renamed as “TROIKA” in 1992-93 and Students’ competitive papers are published yearly as “TRIGGER” Journal. Its volume is serially marked and 2008 saw the VoI.XXI published. It is the most popular scientific event for the students of DCE. In recognition of his services to the cause of education and students’ advancement, IEEE Headquarters in USA awarded Prof. R Kundu “Outstanding Students Branch Counselor in 1989”.

Prof. Kundu is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (IE), India. He is a Fellow of Institution of Electrical Engineers (lEE), U.K., and Senior Member, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA.

Prof. Kundu is also author of several research papers published in India and abroad. One is his commendable contribution to the understanding of “Last element in the Periodic Table” with nuclear charge Z> 137. Prof. Kundu gave highly innovative idea on the extension of Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity. Both the papers were published in a French Scientific Journal in 1991 and 1993. Prof Kundu was a UGC Emeritus Professor from 1993 to 1995 at DCE

Prof O.P. Grover

Prof O.P. Grover graduated in Mech Engg, from Delhi Polytechnic in 1957. After one year of work at Bhakra Dam Project, he joined the faculty of Delhi Polytechnic(later became Delhi College of Engineering) in 1958. He did M. Tech from lIT Kanpur and Ph. Dfrom lIT, Delhi. He became Professor in 1977 and retired from DCE in 1994.

He has written three books and has many papers to his credit. His efforts in networking with professional bodies enriched the college activities. He has been the Hony. Secretary of Institution of Engineers, Delhi Branch and President of ISME for two terms. He held the position of HOD and Dean of Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi. He has been a member of Board of Studies of Production Engineering, Punjab University and Mechanical Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University. He has been expert member of various selection committees of NTPC, DRDO, UPSC etc. and has been a Member of Board of Technical Education, Delhi.

He was awarded K. F. Anita Memorial Prize by Institution of Engineers, India for the Best Paper. He has been awarded as Distinguished Alumnus by Delhi College of Engineering and Eminent Engineer by Institution of Engineers. He was declared as one of the ‘Man of Year 2003’ by American Biographical Institute Inc. and was among ‘Best Citizens of lndiaAward 2003’ by International Publishing House.

He has been responsible for setting up ITM, Gurgaon and Lingya Institute of Management & Technology, Faridabad as founder Director. Since 1999 he is Dean (Academic) at MaharajaAgrasen Institute of Technology, Sector-22, Rohini, Delhi.

Prof.Y.V.S.R Sastry

Prof.Y.V.S.R Sastry graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 1959 in First class with Honors. He joined Roorkee University as Teacher Trainee and obtained M. E. in 1962. He joined Delhi Polytechnic (Now Delhi College of Engineering) in 1962, became Asst Prof in 1965. He became professor in 1974 and retired in Jan 1996. In service, he obtained PhD from lIT, Delhi.

During the tenure at Delhi College of Engineering, he has actively participated in all aspects of Academic administration including the formulation of schemes, conduct of examinations etc. He was instrumental in building the examination cell in Delhi College of Engineering when the university allowed internal examination as a reform. His major contribution is in the shifting of the college to the new site. He had been in-charge of the operations related to the acquisition of the site of the present campus at Bawana Road, planning the zonal layouts etc.

After retirement, he became the first Principal of ITM Gurgaon and relinquished to take over as Managing Director of Piping and Energy Products(P) Ltd. He still holds the position. Besides since 2004 he is teaching as a Professor in Mechanical and Automation Deptt of Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, located in Sector 22, Rohini, Delhi. He is a Member of Delhi University Court. He is on the Governing body and Academic Council of LI MAT.

Prof. M. Pal Das

Professor Madhusudan Pal Das was born on October 14, 1937. Prior to his graduation in Civil Engineering from Shibpur Engineering College, West Bengal in 1959, he had his schooling from Majdia and College education from Presidency College, Calcutta. Later, from 1963 to 1969, he worked for his Masters in Engineering and Doctorate degree (Ph. D.) from Shibpur Engineering College. He received his Ph. D. degree from the University of Calcutta in 1970.

Prof Paldas had been a bright student through out his academic career. He has received Forbes Memorial Medal in 1957, Calcutta University Gold Medal in 1965. He was awarded Mouat Medal in the Calcutta University Convocation in 1980.

Prof Paldas had been an adventurist too. As NCC cadet, he attended two camps. Once he crossed river Damodar on foot, in a lean season, to reach Sindhri (now in Jharkhand) from Bhojudih Coal Washery Site (West Bengal) in 1962.

After graduation, he joined Bridge & Roof Company India Limited (1959 63). He also worked with Mr. D Lloyd James of G E C, England. In 1962 he was in-charge of storage tank construction sector at Barauni oil refinery, which was coming up with Russian collaboration.

He joined his teaching post at Delhi College of Engineering in 1969 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering as Asstt. Prof (Experimental Stress Analysis). He became Professor (Structural Engineering) and joined as the Head of Department of Civil Engineering in 1974. He had been actively associated with Dr. Daniel Post in 1975 in connection with a workshop in Photo mechanics In 1989 90, he has served as the Principal of Delhi College of Engineering for 16 months. In 1993 96, he has served as the Dean (Technology), University of Delhi. During this period, the Credit System was successfully implemented for all B.E. courses under the University. He has also witnessed Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the University during this period.

Prof. S.K. Mazumder

Born in 1938, Prof. S.K. Mazumder graduated in Civil Engineering from B.E. College, Shibpur (now BESU). He took his M.Tech. and Ph.D.degrees in Civil Engineering from lIT, Kharagpur. He served as Assistant Engineer in Irrigation & Waterways Directorate., Govt. of West Bengal, during 1959-62, Lecturer at lIT (Kharagpur) during 1962-67 and Assistant Professor at R.E. College (now NIT), Durgapur during 1967-75.

He joined as Professor at DCE in 1975. While at DCE, he published about 120 technical papers in reputed national! International journals and Conferences in India and abroad.. He was Head of Civil Engg. & Dean, Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi. Prof. Mazumderguided 30 theses atM.E. and Ph.D. levels, authored 3 books and carried out several research projects sponsored by Govt. & private bodies. He is Fellows of IEI, ISH, IWRS, & Members of IAHR, IWRS/ASCE, NIH, IRC, ISCA, CBIP & CDC. He was an AICTE Emeritus Fellow at DCE during 1998-2000 and a visiting professor at EPFL, Switzerland during Feb.-Nov.,1991. He got several awards from the Institution of Engineers (India). Prof. Mazumder has 50 years of teaching, research, design & consultancy experience in hydraulics & water resources engineering. For the last 10 years, he is actively associated with several consultancy organizations in Civil Engineering in Delhi. His research interests are in the field of Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering.

Prof. U.C. Jindal

Born in 1941, Prof. Jindal had his schooling from Ramjas School in Karolbagh, Delhi. He received BE (Mech.) degree from Delhi University in 1963 and obtained M.Tech Mechanicalfrom lIT, Kanpur, in 1971. He got his Ph.Dfrom Delhi University in 1978.

After serving for two years in Industry, he joined Delhi College of Engineering as Lecturer. He rose to the post of Professor and retired in 2000. Dr. Jindal contributed as Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering; Chairman, Committee of Courses and Chairman, Research Board during his service. His clarity in teaching gave confidence to the students in subject like Engineering Mechanics, Vibration, and Instrumentation etc. at UG & PG level. He has guided more than two dozen of final year projects, seven ME thesis and two Ph.D students in the field of Composites. In 1978, Dr Jindal was awarded Toshiba Anand Prize for Original Research in Theory and Practice of Standardization and after retirement he has completed a DST Project on Writing a Book on a Mech.Engg Subject in 2006, as Principal Investigator.

After retirement he has been associated with various Engineering Colleges, such as Amity School of Engg. & Technology, Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Institute of Technology, as a Visiting Professor and a Consultant with M/s Autometers Allianze Ltd. Various Organizations such as NPL, UPSC, DRDO and Engineering Colleges are utilizing his expertise in the matter of selection for various positions.

Prof. Rajesh Prakash

Born in 1942, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from A.M.U.), Aligarh (1964), Master’s Degree (Production) from lIT Kharagpur (1966) and Ph.D. from lIT Delhi in 1976.After serving with M/s L&T Ltd. and A.M.U.,Aligarh, he joined DCE as Asstt. Prof. in 1977. He became Prof. in 1982 and founding HOD of PIE Deptt. in 1988. He retired in Dec. 2002. In between, he was Principal of prestigious PEC, Chandigarh (Deemed University) from March 1992 to Dec.2000.

He has served as Dean of Faculty of Technology, Member of Court, Member ofAcademic Council and Chairman, Board of Research Studies (Technology), University of Delhi and also as the Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Punjab University, Chandigarh. He has been associated with academic bodies of many institutions besides being Member of Governing Boards of many renowned Institutions. Contributions of Dr. R. Prakash include introduction of VE and LCC as subject in Engg. Education, starting of new programmes including BE (P&IE) at DCE. Besides, he contributed to acquiring land for new campus of DCE. During his deanship he could make rules for introducing the current system of examination. He started CEE & revived the B.Tech degree for diploma holders at Delhi University.

He contributed towards development of PEC which later attained the status of a deemed university. He has been associated with AICTE and has worked as a Member of various Expert Committees from time to time. He was member of Sectorial Committee, NBA and also on many Policy Committees of MHRD, Govt. of India. At present, he is mentor/ auditor for centrally funded institutions (N. I .Ts etc.) underTEQIP.

He has authored a book and more than sixty research papers in International and National journals/conferences. Besides he has guided three Ph.D and scores of M.E. dissertations. He was a visiting faculty to lIT, Delhi and has delivered seminar talks at AlT, Bangkok. He is fellow of many learned society like IE India, MSI, ISME, IMA etc. He is awarded Antia Memorial Gold Medal for his research paper by IE (India), in 1996.

Prof. A.K. Tayal

Born on July 20th, 1942, Prof. A.K. Tayal graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1965 from M.B.M. Engineering College, Jodhpur, University of Jodhpur, Rajasthan and later did his M.Sc (Mechanical Engineering) in 1975 from Delhi College of Engineering, University of Delhi. He also did his Ph.D from Delhi University (Delhi College of Engineering) in 1981.

Prof. Tayal started his career as Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at G.B. Pant Polytechnic Okhla, New Delhi and later joined Delhi College of Engineering in June, 1967 as Lecturer. Fora brief period from May 1971 to December, 1971, Prof. Tayal worked as Communication Specialist in Western Union Telegraph Co., New York, U.S.A. Prof. Tayal returned to Delhi College of Engineering in February 1972. For a period of one yearfrom September 1984 to September, 1985 he also served as Visiting Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia, U.S.A. In October 1985, Prof. Tayal returned to Delhi College of Engineering and served as Assistant Professor and later as Professor from September, 1993 to 31st July, 2002 when he superannuated.

Prof. Tayal was awarded ‘Sir Rajendra Nath Mookherjea Memorial Gold Medal” for the year 1982-83 by the Institution of Engineers (India) on the paper “Plain Strain Extrusion Studies by the Finite Element Method” alongwith a co-author. Prof. Tayal is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India). He has a number of research papers to his credit, published in International, National journals and presented at Conferences and Seminars . His areas of interest are - Applied Mechanics and Application of Numerical Methods especially Finite Element Method. He has authored two books viz: “Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics ” & “Instrumentation and Mechanical Measurements and Control”. He is currently Professor at MaharajaAgrasen Institute of Technology, Rohini, Delhi.

Prof. B.P. Bandyopadhyay

Born in January 1943, Prof. B.P. Bandyopadhyay graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. He did his Masters and Ph.D. in 1966 and 1985 respectively from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. During his more than 33 years of long distinguished teaching career at Delhi College of Engineering, Prof. Bandyopadhyay taught Production, Industrial Engg. and Management subjects and held various prestigious positions e.g. Head of Department of Production & Industrial Engineering and Dean, Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi, Delhi.
He has a number of research papers in the field of Mechanical, Production and Industrial Engineering to his credit. He also guided numerous M.E. dissertations.
After retirement he became founder Principal of Bhiwani Institute of Technology & Science, Bhiwani. Later he joined N.C. College of Engineering, Israna, Panipat as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has also been founder Director of KNGD Modi Engineering College, Modinagar (U.P.) and Accurate Institute of Management & Technology, Greater Noida (U.P.)
